The course develops students' knowledge of anthropology by exploring key topics: concepts of culture, social groups, language use, kinship and gender, symbols, religion and mythology, and ethnographic research. The course also provides basic training in anthropological essay writing.

2 one-hour lectures and 1 one-hour tutorial per week.

EL2510 HISTORY OF LANGUAGE IN THE BRITISH ISLES

Pre-requisite(s): Available only to students in Programme Year 2 or above who have passed EL 1509 or equivalent language courses in other disciplines.

Note(s): This is a 6-week course.

A chronological examination of the linguistic history of the British Isles, including discussion of the emergence, social and cultural development, and (in some cases) extinction of all languages known to have been used in the archipelago from earliest times. The presently living languages (English, Scots, Gaelic, Irish and Welsh) will be discussed in relation to their individual historical developments, their mutual relationships, and their relationships with extinct languages which influenced them in earlier periods. The main focus of the course will not be on internal linguistic history but on the socio-political aspects of language history. Examination of the external history of the languages will illuminate many issues in socio-historical linguistics: mutual influencing of languages, standardisation, diversification, style and register, status of dialects and sociolects.

GG2505 MAPPING AND MONITORING THE ENVIRONMENT

Pre-requisite(s): Available only to students in programme year 2 or above.

As much as 80% of the information used in decision-making has a geo-based context. Knowledge and understanding of this basic resource can radically improve the effectiveness of every manager, and especially those concerned with Earth recourses and environment. In support of this need the course covers the following: measurement, recording and manipulation of ground-surveyed and remotely-sensed data; approaches to environmental monitoring based on multi-temporal images and/or maps; the storage, manipulation and timely provision of geographical information; methods of analysing and presenting the results through GIS and Geovisualisation. The technical basis will form the foundations of the course, with greater emphasis placed on applications of GI through continuous reference to case-studies at a range of scales (from local to global) both in lectures and practical projects (including preparation of effective maps using appropriate technologies.

2 one-hour lecture per week and 6 two-hour practicals.

Mutta tuo tosiaan kuulostaa vähän haastavalta.

Voisin ehkä myös ottaa jonkun ykkösluokan maantiedon kurssin. Geologiaa en uskalla enää ottaa. Mitkähän muut oppiaineet olisivat kivoja? Tämä on nyt vähän monimutkaista.

MARINE AND COASTAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT kuulostaa tosi mielenkiintoiselta. Siitä haluaisin ykkösluokan kurssin, mutta se on perjantaisin. Kakkosluokan kurssinkin voisin ottaa, mutta en tiedä milloin sitä on. Oon ehkä rekisteröitynyt sille, mutta sitä ei näy mun lukujärjestyksessä.

Satu saa nyt luvan auttaa, kun se pomppii tuossa patjalla. Teitä ei nyt ehkä kiinnosta, mutta voisin silti raportoida, mitä se neuvoi. Tekin voitte vähän kommentoida tähän ongelmaan, kun ensi viikolla voisin mennä taas keskustelemaan oponi kanssa.
